Preschool vs. Pre-K: What's the Difference?
5 min readUpdated October 3, 2026

Parents ask us this all the time, and the honest answer is that the two overlap more than the names suggest. Both are play-based early learning. The difference is mostly about age, pacing, and how directly the year points toward kindergarten.
Preschool: roughly ages 3 to 4
Preschool is where children learn how to be part of a group. The big work of the year is social: taking turns, following a routine, using words instead of hands, and building the confidence to try new things. Academics are woven in through play. Children are counting blocks, noticing letters in their names, and listening to stories every day, but it does not look like a lesson.
Pre-K: the year before kindergarten
Pre-kindergarten is for children who will start kindergarten the following fall. The day still centers on play, but it is more structured, and the goals get more specific: recognizing letters and their sounds, writing their name, counting with meaning, following multi-step directions, and sitting for a story with a group.
Just as important, pre-K builds the independence kindergarten expects. Children practice managing their own belongings, speaking up when they need help, and working through small frustrations on their own.
How we structure both at Mountainside
Our preschool and pre-K children share one bright classroom with hands-on learning centers, an art area, a reading corner, and a writers' workshop where pre-K friends practice letters and names. Both groups visit our STEAM room each week and spend time in the indoor gym and on the playground every day the weather allows.
The difference is in the pacing. Pre-K children get more time with early literacy and math, and their teachers focus on the specific skills kindergarten teachers tell us matter most.
Which one is right for your child?
Age usually decides it: if your child will be kindergarten-eligible next fall, pre-K is the fit. If not, preschool gives them a year to grow into it. If your child is right on the line, talk with us. We look at the whole child, not just a birthday, and we will tell you honestly which room will serve them best.
